Christian Unions 'excited' over Richard Dawkins' launch of Secularist Societies on campuses

Christian university students are said to be ‘excited’ at the launch of a campaign by leading atheist, Professor Richard Dawkins, to see Secularist Societies on every university/college campus within the next 12 months.

Professor Dawkins’ latest campaign follows his high-profile bus adverts declaring ‘There probably is no God, so stop worrying and enjoy yourself’. The campaign was not only superseded by Christian groups launching their own transport advertising campaign stating ‘There definitely is a God: so join the Christian Party and enjoy your life’, but was also followed up by a distribution on university campuses of 400,000 copies of Mark’s Gospel, and high-profile outreach meetings, where students were given the opportunity to ask questions about the relationship between science and religion and the relevance of religion today.

Professor Dawkins’ latest attempt to ‘neuter’ religious belief in Britain, by the promoting of secularist views amongst university students, has been warmly welcomed by UCCF: The Christian Unions, which supports Christian Unions in 140 universities.

Pod Bhogal, communications director said: “Once again, Professor Dawkins is to be thanked for raising the profile of God and faith issues. His book, ‘The God Delusion’ was a brilliant platform on which Christian Unions were able to host events where the claims about God and Jesus Christ could be openly discussed, and through that, people have become Christians. His bus adverts gave students an opportunity to ask questions about God’s existence in a new way, and now his secularist society campaign on every campus will excite CU members, who are keen to share their faith and raise the spiritual temperature amongst students.”

Mr Bhogal also believes the National Union of Students will want to keep a close watch on how secularist societies develop. He said: “CUs have been at the forefront of drawing up good practice with the NUS as to how religious/philosophical societies should work on campuses, and that means that every society must ensure that all its meetings are open to all students to attend. In reality, this will mean the new secularist societies must open their doors to Christian students, and they will look forward to contributing to open and honest debates about the nature of faith and belief, as well as the person and work of Jesus Christ.”

UCCF: The Christian Unions says that it will be encouraging the NUS to monitor the open events policy they brokered between Christian Unions and Guilds to ensure that freedom of speech and belief is maintained at British universities/colleges.
