Meltdown
Marcus Honeysett
“A book about living for truth in a truth-less society”
In John 17 Jesus prays that we would be sanctified in truth. He also says that God’s Word is Truth. However the message of our culture is that 'Universal Truth' does not exist, rather that truth is personal - what is ‘true’ for me may not be ‘true’ for you. In academia this is a widely held view and is known as postmodernism. Couched in complex language, the logical conclusion of many postmodern theories is often hidden. Meltdown presents these theories in simple language, helping us to understand postmodernity and enabling us to engage with it and witness to the Truth in the midst of confusion.
Meltdown is a superb introduction to postmodernity for everyone at, or starting college or university. It helped me to realise where my course (Geography) has been influenced by these theories, and enabled me to offer a Christian perspective. Honeysett asserts that the Christian worldview is true, and as such it must involve the whole of our being. We must engage with academia and not be guilty of having a Christian/academic divide in our lives.
Bearing witness to the Truth is essential to our lives as Christians. We cannot expect students of postmodernity to listen to us if we are not willing to practise what we preach.
