A Gospel Generation
Over 550 students, CU staff and Relay workers formed the biggest ever 'Forum', UCCF's annual student leaders conference. A whole generation of leaders received theological and practical input, thinking together about how to be a witness on campus.
Samuel McWhirter, chair of UCCF's Student Council said: "The conference lived up to its title as we learnt, understood and embraced 'The Gospel of our Glorious God'." Each morning, Vaughan Roberts, Rector of St Ebbe's Church, Oxford, clearly taught and reminded students of the basic truths of the gospel through four studies in Romans. When one student was asked after the Bible reading the reason for such a huge smile on her face she replied: "It is so good to be alive and believe the gospel!"
The foundation was well laid for Lindsay Brown of IFES to bring two challenging talks on the aims of Christian Unions - mission and maturity. Characteristically interspersed with powerful stories of courageous students around the world, the reactions of many were summed up by Rosie Farrell, from Durham University Christian Union: "He dealt with any objection I had ever raised in my mind about taking the Gospel to the world. I came away thinking that serving the gospel is the only way to die."
On the final evening, every country in the world was covered in the World Mission Half Night of Prayer. Peter Chilvers, senior staff worker in London reports: "Students prayed enthusiastically as guests from IFES movements around the world and students who had returned from summer missions spoke of what the Lord is doing. Clearly the teaching from the week had deeply impacted their lives."
A wide range of seminars and workshops addressed many aspects of student ministry from 'Diversity in Unity' to 'Holiness in cyberspace'. A highlight for many were the dramatic recitals of the books of Luke and Acts by ex-Broadway actor, Bruce Kuhn.
Nigel Pollock, Associate Head of Student Ministries for UCCF said: "As ever it was a brilliant conference, but we are always conscious that the end of Forum is the beginning: these students are returning to universities and colleges in the coming weeks. We would value prayer that they will continue in what they have learnt and shine as stars as they hold forth the Word of life.
CU Visions
Name: Ruth Hayman Vision: To see students and staff at Bath University coming to Christ - to get the fabulous message of our lord and saviour to every corner, nook and cranny of the campus and to be disciples, disciplers and missionaries.
Name: Rosemary Vision: my vision would be that we'd grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, to glorify Him, and making disciples of Him!
Name: Rachel (Glamorgan CU) Vision: That Christians on campus would be united- loving and supporting each other. That we would do everything in God's strength for His glory. That we would have a passion for sharing the Gospel with others, and we would become mature in our faith. That God would work in the hearts of non-Christians and bring them to Him. That as these non-Christians are saved, they would be built up in the faith and become useful for God. That we would help them to grow, and that together we would turn the world upside down the way Paul and Silas did (Acts 17)! But most of all that we would be humble servants of our God, never seeking to do things in our own strength, but totally depending on Him for everything.
Name: Nathan Weston Vision: To see every student at Manchester and UMIST come to know Jesus as their Saviour and Lord! It's such a privilege to play some small part in doing God's work, and we're so thankful to Him.
