Step 4 - Start doing mission

The CU exists to do mission so it’s good to get on with that task as soon as possible. You may feel small, but the witness of fice people can be just as effective as the witness of a larger CU.

Doing mission will actually unite you as a team, so if you want to really grow in your relationships with each other, do mission! It can be tempting to wait until the CU feels more sorted before doing mission, but if CUs waited until they felt sorted nothing would ever happen.

By being involved in mission from the beginning you clearly show new members of the CU what it is all about.

How do we do mission when there are only five of us?

Use the relationships you have already – but be intentional.

Invite some of your mates to hang out with your CU mates and their mates. Go to the cinema together, watch sport, do a pub quiz, go to the pub etc., and be praying and looking out for opportunities to talk about the gospel.

Organise a low key event

Invite some friends round for dinner and then share your testimony or get someone else to do a 3-minute talk about what Christians believe and then discuss it.

Watch a film and get someone to do a 5-minute talk afterwards exploring some of the issues that the film raises.

Organise a bigger event for the wider student body

A lunchbar – invite a speaker to speak on a topic that would interest people, something like ‘Why does God allow suffering?’ Then put on a free lunch and allow people to ask questions afterwards. Again, publicity and prayer are key to the event.

An acoustic night – invite a Christian singer/song writer to come and play and in between songs talk about how the songs are shaped by their faith.

There are plenty of other ideas in the evangelism section of this website.
