Freshers' Week Stories
Over the last few weeks, we've been inviting you to pray with us for Christian Unions during freshers' week. Here are a few stories from the past month about how CUs have been welcoming new students and sharing the good news of Jesus during freshers.
Brunel Christian Union have been a friendly face on campus by helping freshers move in to their halls and hand out Christian Union tea towels! They have also been running a very popular (with the nightclub bouncers!) coffee stall outside the campus nightclub. The CU have been able to demonstrate and speak about God’s love to students around them by handing out tea and coffee to students on a night out. CU Staff Worker Stephen Fraser commented; ‘Many people who hear about the CU remark “Oh, you’re the people who do the coffee stall!” It provides a great service to the university.’
Hertfordshire CU recently put on their first ever lunchbar – a speaker event with a free lunch provided. Around 20 guests (non-CU members) came along, many saying that they came because they thought the talk title – ‘Can the resurrection be true?’ – was interesting. The CU saw some of these guests come back to more than one event, interested in hearing more and hearing answers to their questions about the Christian faith.
‘See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God!’ Cambridge CU sought to demonstrate something of this lavish welcome with sweet treats and live jazz as part of their ‘Taste and See’ evening. As well as a talk, they also produced ‘testimony magazines’, sharing stories of students’ experiences of faith, and invited new students to explore the good news of Jesus at university.
