Relay Blog: October 2017
This time last year, Tim Jackson applied for a position on UCCF’s Relay Programme, a year of mission, training and discipleship alongside a Christian Union. Two months in, he reflects on how it compares to his expectations.
When I was a student, Relay offered me the attractive combination of both being invested in and having opportunities to invest in others. Having regular, scheduled time to study about God in more depth through the programme stood out to me in particular. I had received wonderful teaching and training at UCCF conferences as a student, leaving me wanting to know and love Christ more for myself, as well as desiring to tell others about Him. I figured that Relay would give me the opportunity to receive this kind of teaching in an even more focused way.
Relay would also allow me to continue to be involved with sharing the gospel among students, which I had enjoyed being a part of as a member of the Leeds University Union Christian Union (LUUCU).
With this in mind, I was keen to apply for Relay.
And it hasn’t disappointed.
During the last month, I have received teaching and training in a variety of ways.
At the start of the month, I attended apologetics training across 2 days with fellow Relay Workers from the region. This was a great chance to practice giving talks tackling common objections to the Christian faith, in a safe and encouraging environment, where we looked to sharpen one another up in these skills.
Near the end of the month, the whole of the UCCF team across Yorkshire and the North East – including Staff Workers, Team Leader, UCCF’s Head of Creative Evangelism as well as us Relay Workers – gathered together for a couple of days. We received fantastic teaching on Mark’s gospel, which enthused me for God and His Word once again. The weekly study programme and regular supervisions have also been inspiring and helpful as I grow in my faith. It has been a privilege to spend time developing skills like apologetics, in addition to growing in knowledge and love of God.
It is a further privilege to be able to dedicate time to pass on what I have been learning to the students that I work with. I enjoy being able to meet regularly with students who are keen to look at God’s Word together, have our hearts warmed to Christ and consider how we can live and speak for Him. At a recent training day for CU leaders in the region and at the LUUCU weekend away this month, I, under God and His Word, had the pleasure of leading seminars helping to equip students in their evangelism.
It has been an honour to be involved with the Relay programme so far. I’m glad that I applied this time a year ago, and look forward to how God will lead and use me during the rest of the programme and beyond!
