Facebook page tick list

Each customizable option on your Facebook page can help point people in the right direction and make it a super friendly. Here’s a helpful check list to help you refresh or start up a page to make sure you’re making the most out of all the options available.

  • Profile picture. An obvious one, and you likely already have one, but make sure it’s representing who you are so people can clearly identify your posts when they are scrolling through their feed. A logo for your CU will become recognisable, so make this your profile picture (and make sure it’s the same or similar across all your social media accounts)
  • Header. This is a helpful feature for advertising up-coming events and welcoming new freshers. It’s the first big image someone landing on your page will see, so make it welcoming and inviting. E.g. a simple ‘Welcome Freshers!’ image leading up to Welcome Week will show that you’re active and will encourage new students to find out more of what you’re up to.
  • Captions. They’re often overlooked, but the caption for your header and profile picture are still important ways people can connect with you. A ‘Welcome Freshers’ Header may encourage them to click on the image to find out more, so make sure the caption is pointing people towards what the next step is (e.g. a sign up form, a contact form, links to posts, etc). Check out this guide for writing captions.
  • About section. Make sure this is up to date with all the essential info plus a few sentences about who you are and what you do. It will appear in the left hand side of your page. There’s lots of things to do/update in the about section, particularly ways someone can get in touch with you. Take your time to update this.
  • Pinned posts. These will always appear at the top of your page until you unpin them or replace it with another pinned post. This is similar to the Header in that it’s the first post people will see, so it’s ideal for promoting up-coming events or welcoming new students and pointing them in the right direction. Update this regularly, otherwise you’ll be promoting past events and people may assume you’re inactive!
  • Tabs. A very small detail, but you can re-order the tabs that appear at the top of your page, which will make it even easier for someone to navigate your page. Facebook will use default tabs and pick ones it thinks will suit you best unless you say otherwise —the default ones aren’t always the best! The most helpful ones for your CU page would be: About, Photos, Groups, Events, Videos.

There are other things you can do with Facebook, which you can check out in Appendix 3, which are helpful but non-essential. Focus on getting your page up to a good standard, then move on to these. If you’ve checked off the items on this tick list, let’s take it to the next level.
