The ‘next step’

“This seems like something I’d be interested in, what do I do now?”

If we don’t answer this question well, less people will engage with the CU because there isn’t a clear ‘next step’ for them to complete.

A clear next step is not just helpful, it’s also a sign of genuine interest in the person watching and a want to welcome them into your community.

Here are some things you could point them towards. You don’t have to mention them all in the video, a simple ‘check the link in our bio’ in the video and further information in the caption will be enough to point people towards the right things. Keep it simple in the video.

  • Welcome Zoom Call: A great way for new students to understand more about the CU and meet some friendly faces before landing at Uni. Check out this resource on how to run this event.
  • Facebook Group: A private group new students can join to connect with the CU community. Check out this resource on using Facebook for top tips on using groups.
  • Follow/message us on social media: It’s most likely they’re watching your video on one of your social media pages; ask them to send a message to your page to let you know they’re interested in finding out more. It’s a quick easy way to have personal contact straight away.
  • Google form: A quick way for people to register interest and gather information about them. Your form could include asking if they’d like to join an impact group, be added to a group WhatsApp, and even ask how they found out about the CU – helpful information to know for posting future publicity.
  • New Students Getaway: If you’re a bigger CU, you may consider doing a New Students Getaway just before term starts. Point them towards a sign-up sheet or a post that has more information about the event.

Caption is key

It can often be overlooked, but the caption holds more power than you think. Here are some things to consider when writing the caption for your post.

We're written the example caption on this side. Don't forget to customise the bits in bold.

The comments on this side will help you think through what to write in your own caption.

New to insert University name? Want to find community before you arrive? You’ve come to the right place!

The first line of a caption is all a person will see until they expand the rest of the caption, so it’s needs to grab their attention straight away. A question that targets your chosen audience will encourage them to watch the video and read the caption to find out more.

At insert CU name, we’re so excited to welcome you to campus! Whoever you are, whatever you believe, wherever you’re from, there’s a place for you here!

Keep your caption welcoming to all. Avoid Christian jargon, so no one feels alienated. Rather, encourage them that there is space for them in the Christian Union.

Want to know more? Send us a message on our social media pages, we’d love to hear from you. Make sure you follow us to keep up to date with all our activities and announcements, and check out the link in our bio/the links down below to find out more about what we’re running for new students!

People will look at the caption before they get to the end of the video, so make sure you outline what they need to do next if they want to know more. Make sure you include links in the caption for Facebook and use your link in bio for Instagram (check out the Instagram and Facebook resource for more tips on posting).

@SU @University @UCCF #freshers #newstudents #university

Make sure to tag your SU and University so they can see it and potentially repost it (and tag UCCF so we can see it and repost it). Include all relevant hashtags so more people can find your post easily.

When’s the best time to post your video? What else could you be posting? You need a strategy! Have a look at our guide to making a great strategy for your social media.
