Writing the script

There’s lots of things you’ll want to consider for your script. How do we capture and keep people’s attention? What will make it feel personal and welcoming? We’ve produced example scripts for different types of locations/CUs that you can use as inspiration for your own or download to edit for yourselves.

Things to think about

Here is an example script with some comments, to show the different think you need to think through when planning and writing your script.

We've written the script itself like this.

And the comments are over here like this.

Starting Uni. What’s it actually like?

The first 5 seconds are key! A relevant question is great as it engages the viewer straight away as they’ll stick around to know the answer. Think of questions that new students are actually asking.

We love Glasgow - from coffee shops, pubs and charity shops across the West End, to the friendliest locals you could imagine, to our Instagrammable campus where there’s loads going on - and we cannot wait to welcome you here.

What are some defining features of your city or campus? If you’re a big city like Glasgow, you could include details in the script. If your uni identity is based on your campus, you could include notable buildings or locations in your video footage. It makes it more personal and people feel more connected and excited. Check out the example videos to see this in action at Essex university.

But what’s it actually like?

Because online open days and online groups can only tell you so much.

We know that

  • meeting people
  • making memories
  • growing as a person

Will be the things that make your university experience.

And as Christian Union, that’s what we’re all about. We’re about:

  • Community that really cares about each other
  • Space to explore big questions
  • Giving people a chance to share what they believe
  • Encouraging one another from the Bible
  • Small groups that really have an impact!

All as a diverse community of students.

Make sure to include welcoming, encouraging, inclusive language. We want anyone who watches this video to feel like there is room for them at CU, whoever they are or whatever they believe!

So whether it's through our small impact groups, our main central gatherings, or the events we’ll be running on campus, we’d love you to come join in.

Make sure to briefly outline your flagship events so people have an idea of what the CU is up to and where they could fit in to CU life. Make sure to include more info on these things on your social media channels so students know how to plug in to the different things going on.

Glasgow is calling.

  • Follow us on social media.
  • Connect with the link in our bio.

We can’t wait to meet you!

There needs to be a ‘next step’ at the end of your video – how are students that are interested going to connect with your CU? What’s the one thing they need to know to do? Make sure all the relevant links are either in your bio on Instagram or use the caption on a Facebook post to help point people towards the next step.

Questions for consideration

  • How can you show you understand and articulate this year group’s worries while also offering excitement?
  • What’s so special about our university’s life that we’d like to share?
  • How do we best represent the warmth and welcome students are looking for?
  • Will our friends who aren’t Christians want to watch and share our video, let alone CU members?
  • How do we avoid overselling or underselling what we have to offer?
  • What’s the one next step that we will articulate at the end for viewers to connect with us?

Example scripts

Here are three example scripts for videos from Glasgow, Essex and London (you can see the finished videos on the next page). Feel free to download, edit and use for your own CU.

  • Glasgow (larger CU, campus-based Uni): PDF or Word doc
  • Essex (smaller CU, campus-based Uni): PDF or Word doc
  • London (smaller CUs, city-based Unis): PDF or Word doc
